Zaha Hadid, Context and Objectopolis
Fourth Year
Objectopolis is a fictional city whose purpose is to help stimulate thought and discussion around the importance we as designers attribute to architectural context. The image above represents a collection of ‘object’ buildings - buildings that were initially designed to become the centre point of their surroundings; stand out from the context that they inhabit and that, by many, are considered acontextual.
However Objectopolis attempts to question the existing theories related to the ‘building as object’ by removing these spaces from their intended sites, forcing them to respond to similar spaces and transplanting them into a grand, monumental setting. This process is similar to Piranesi’s imaginings of classical Rome Le Anticheta Romane and through it we can examine the reasons behind the forms that object buildings take and analyse any subtle methods their designers use to relate their context.
Through analysis of these aspects of object buildings we can broaden our understanding of how architects should design as part of a wider context. Objectopolis aims to facilitate this exploration and highlight the more individual ways that designers build in relation to site.
