Between Thinking and Making 4
Third Year
The final BTM project asked us to quickly design a small gallery space that took up a 9m/9m/9m volume. We then had to experiment with the materiality of the space we created and analyse the effect that this had on the ‘tactility’ of the space. To achieve this we applied different materials the design’s three faces; the floor, walls and ceiling.
Three final solutions were chosen, the first being brick floor with white render walls and ceiling which gave the space a very ‘airy’ quality with lots of natural light bouncing off the white walls and the bricks giving the space some colour and texture.
The second solution was concrete floor with brick walls and ceiling, this was the most textured space with the roughness of the bricks contrasting with the smoothness of the concrete floor.
Finally timber flooring was combined with concrete on the walls and ceiling. The lighting in this space was very harsh casting strong shadows on the floor creation a cool grey space.
